When most people hear the words home remodel, they think of quick fixes, surface-level upgrades, or what I like to call the “lipstick on a pig” approach. A little paint here, some new hardware there — just enough to make things look fresh without really addressing the bones of the home.
But for me, remodeling is more than that. It’s about applying the skills I’ve built over the years as a craftsman to bring lasting quality to every corner of a home.
Recently, I had the chance to take on a full home remodel — and instead of just covering things up, I was able to transform the space from the inside out, using the same level of care and detail I bring to my cabinetry and furniture. Here’s a look at what went into it:
-
Floors: I pulled up all of the old flooring and installed brand-new LVP for a clean, durable, and modern finish.
-
Trimwork: Every inch of the interior trim was replaced with shaker/farmhouse style trim — milled right here in my own shop. Not only did this save thousands of dollars, it gave the home a completely custom, high-end feel.
-
Cabinetry: I built new ceiling-height upper kitchen cabinets and refaced the lower cabinets and bathroom vanities, turning ordinary builder-grade units into custom showpieces.
-
Doors: Replaced all 11 interior doors for a cohesive, fresh look.
-
Repairs & Finishing: Patched countless sheetrock holes, installed new appliances, and repainted the entire interior.
-
Details: Replaced thresholds throughout the home, installed new ceiling fans, swapped out smoke detectors, and even handled plumbing tasks like replacing all the toilet rings.
-
Fireplace: Added a stunning faux-rock finish to the fireplace, turning it into a true focal point of the home.
-
Maintenance: Deep-cleaned the AC evaporator and tackled all those little things that often get overlooked.
And here’s the thing — I did almost all of it myself. Every cut, every joint, every finish came from years of experience: from restoring Victorian homes as a teenager, to building Whataburgers in the ’90s, to designing custom furniture and cabinetry today.
That’s what I mean by a craftsman’s approach to remodeling. It’s not just about updating a house — it’s about building quality into it, piece by piece, so the work lasts for years to come.
This remodel reminded me how much I love working across different areas of the trade. Whether it’s a kitchen cabinet, a farmhouse island, or a whole-home renovation, the goal is the same: do it right, do it well, and make it beautiful.
